4 Reasons to Consider IUD Removal

4 Reasons to Consider IUD Removal

There are many contraception options available to women currently, and that’s a good thing — because you need to take into account numerous considerations before arriving at the form of birth control that’s best for you.

You need to think about your lifestyle, how important convenience is to you, whether you value spontaneity with your partner, and more.

A popular form of birth control is the intrauterine device, or IUD. Like every form of contraception, however, it may be right for you, but just for a time. Why might you want or need to remove your IUD? That’s what we’ll delve into in this post.

It’s also important to remember that IUD removal must be performed by someone properly qualified, like your trusted Primary Care Walk-In Care provider.

Our caring team is here for all your healthcare needs, from routine care like your annual wellness exam and immunizations to treatment for common illnesses, chronic conditions, and more.

How does an IUD work?

An IUD is a very small T-shaped birth control device that’s inserted and placed in your uterus by your provider. There are two types of IUDs — copper and hormonal.

The plastic-coated copper IUDs cause an inflammatory response in your body that repels sperm, making it nearly impossible for them to reach the egg. Hormonal IUDs make the mucus in your cervix thicker, and this more viscous mucus acts as a powerful obstacle for the sperm. It also traps the sperm. These IUDs suppress ovulation and thin your uterus’ lining as well, making it more inhospitable to pregnancy.

IUDs are popular because once they’re placed, that’s it — you don’t have to do anything else, and they can stay in for years.

Why you might decide to have your IUD removed

There’s a season for different types of birth control, as we noted before. Something that worked well may lose its appeal or usefulness for a woman. We’ve compiled the top four triggers that lead to a woman deciding to get her IUD taken out.

1. You experience complications with your IUD

Sometimes an IUD can cause problems for certain women, like excessive bleeding, pain, and even severe headaches. If these symptoms are disrupting your life, you and your provider may decide that the IUD isn’t for you and that it should be removed.

Fortunately, you’ve got other options, from the birth control pill, shots, implants, and patches, to a barrier method like the diaphragm.

2. A problem with the IUD itself

Sometimes an IUD can move from where it should be, outside of your uterus, and this would require your provider to remove it.

In certain instances, an IUD can also break, which would also necessitate removal.

3. Your IUD has reached the end of its effectiveness

IUDs have expiration dates, so once those arrive, they’ll no longer be effective at preventing pregnancy.

The duration of an IUD’s effectiveness varies by brand, and your Primary Care Walk-In Clinic provider can discuss your IUD’s expiration date with you.

4. You’d like to become pregnant

If you’ve decided that you’d like to conceive, your provider can remove your IUD promptly. Your fertility is restored in just a short time after IUD removal.

You’re in control when it comes to your fertility and what birth control method works best for you at any given time.

We’re here to support your fertility journey, no matter where you are within it.
